There is a free bar code scanner that shows related ads to the item being scanned, that I could add to the Price Book app. Some users have asked for a bar code scanner. How would people feel about having a paid version of Price Book that had a bar code scanner that showed ads that were related to the item that was being scanned?

The only place that ads would show up would be when the bar code scanner was being used. Do people feel OK if such a bar code scanner was part of a paid version of Price Book?

I think this would be a great addition. If we could scan the bar code and have the item added to our list then we could add the price info. Would save time and be so much easier.

The problem I have run in to with the bar code scanner is that I can get a bar code scanner for the Price Book app, BUT... it only provides the bar code number. It doesn't tell you what the item is. To get a database that contains the bar code number and the item name costs a decent amount. An alternative is that I can create the database myself. So... I'm not too sure how to make the bar code scanner useful at this point. I'll keep thinking about it, and suggestions are welcome.

I can currently add a bar code scanner, but all it will give you is the bar code, not what it is. So you would still have to enter the item information. BUT once one person has entered the item information, then if the bar code is found in the website database, then everyone will be able to have the item information.

A problem I can see with this is that if the information for a bar code is entered incorrectly it would be a problem for everyone. So there would have to a a wiki like function where anyone could update the bar code's item information with the correct data.

How does this approach sound?

Wiki like function I think would work well. It has for wikipedia. It wouldn't take long to get a database built up.

I played a little with another "list" program that has the bar code feature. Its iPhone "scanning" feature only works with a 3GS and above, and I only have a 3G, so I only could use the manual entry feature. Upon entering the code, the product name would automatically appear. One problem with (the free version of) this program is that it won't accept and does not recognize the old 6-numeral codes (e.g. Heinz Ketchup). And, so far, its online database doesn't allow editing of the product once the bar code is entered.

I much prefer Price Book's handling of price comparisons, and look forward to further development of the "list" feature.
