The company that provides me with the bar code scanner, now provides pricing information for the items with barcodes, from online sources and also local prices, selected by location.

The questions I have for the Shopping List app users since Shopping List app users enter their own prices are:

1) How would you like this pricing information displayed?

2) Would you like a button that takes you to a page where you can view online prices and local prices separate from the prices you have entered?

3) Would you like local prices displayed on the same page as the prices you have entered?

4) Other?

I look forward to hearing your comments.

Thanks,

Jim

I would prefer them on the same page for comparison

I don't know if this is possible but the info I would like to see when I scan the barcode would be for the barcode to 1.) add a new item if I don't already have it listed or 2.) attach it to an entry that I already have. A message could come up after the scan that asks whether or not this is a new item or an existing one.
I would like it to fill in the details of the item ie name of product, brand, amount and units. If it could tell me the price that the store sells it for that would be way cool and I would like to see it on the same page as my item, maybe in a different color.

@digitoes -

What the barcode will provide is both:

A) Name or product, brand, amount and units
B) A list of prices for that item online and local

With

1) A) I can ask if you want to add a new item and the product, brand, units, etc will
be filled in.
But to select the price you would have to type in the store? Or you could enter
the price yourself?
2) I could provide a list of prices that are online and local, BUT, the list might be
long and might swamp the other prices that you have already entered? Or
3) I could only provide the local prices that are near your GPS location? and
4) Have a switch that allows you to look at online prices?

I'm thinking that a list of prices might well be way over the top unless they are tied to GPS location, and then it might still be too much. Also, I think that it is highly likely that the price will have to be adjusted manually in most cases anyway because of constant fluctuations, sales, etc. Maybe furnishing the prices could be optional??

For me, the most useful functions will be the option to add a new item or attach to a pre-existing item and the ability to have the app prefill all the other pertinent info . . . brand, package size, unit type, and whatever else can be gleaned from a barcode.

I agree with lvfinch in regard to the barcode filling in all the pertinent info about the item and then the user could fill in the store and price themselves.

I released a new version of the Shopping List app, version 1.10, to Apple for review, where after scanning a barcode, you can download online and local prices for that barcode. Currently though, the package size and units are not provided in the barcode prices database, so that information will still need to be provided a user. But once provided, all other users will get the package size and units for that barcode from the pricebook.aerende.com website. The online prices
will contain:

Merchant
Price
URL
Quality

The local prices are based on your GPS location and will also contain:

Phone Number
Latitude
Longitude
Distance
Address

For any item that you have scanned a barcode for, the Shopping List app will provide you
with a list of online and local prices. You can select these prices and add them to your
list of prices for your items.

NOTE: Currently the online and local prices are not provided with the Quantity amount.
Hence a price might be for ONE quantity of an item or for FOUR quantity of an item.
If the item is a commodity, and one price is four times another, you can suppose that
the quantity for the four times larger price is FOUR. But to be sure, use the URL
link to check the website associated with that price.

There is a video showing how to use the app here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16r6Q4aRo9c

Sorry for the lack of clarity in the video. I still haven't figured out how to film with such a short focal length.

I'll let you know once the app is approved by Apple.

The version of the Shopping List app with access to the website with prices for scanned barcodes is in the App Store.
